A beloved South Indian sage, Ramana Maharshi (1879–1950) became renowned for his noble silence and power of asking “Who am I?” Born Venkataraman Iyer in Tamil Nadu, he realised aged 16 the death of ego and awakening to the Atman - a liberated being. Every year, many thousands make the pilgrimage to Ramana’s ashram at the foot of the sacred hill of Arunachala, outside Tiruvannamalai. His teachings focus on self-inquiry (vichara) to discover the source, prior to the ‘I' thought.
I recently received this link below available on YouTube. In January 2009, I gave teachings on a hotel rooftop, a few minutes walk from the ashram. I have paid several visits to Tiru over the decades. John David, a spiritual teacher, kindly invited me to respond to deep spiritual questions. We held the interview on the rooftop. John David’s First Five Questions to Christopher
In the context of the teachings of Ramana Maharshi, which reflects the ancient Indian wisdom, there is the fundamental question, Who am I? Who are you?
What is enlightenment?
Could you say something more about freedom of being? (mentioned in previous response)
So would it (freedom of being) be words like spontaneous, innocence and presence?
Are there any qualifications for enlightenment? Is practice necessary?
John David is an English spiritual teacher, author, filmmaker, and painter whose work is rooted in the Advaita, or nondual, tradition. He is the author of European Masters: Blueprints for Awakening: Unique Dialogues with 14 European Masters on the Teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi.
