NEW YEAR SEEMS UNDERWAY. WHERE DOES IT HIDE?

2026. New Year has come
Not through back door
i can’t find indoors
not among leaves
swirling in garden
nor felt in chill of
winter’s wily ways
nor in cat’s meow.

'Announcing midnight' to start 'New Year' in Sydney, Australia

How can I believe in
new year hidden from wild
and wintry skies buried
in two woolly gloves
worn for old time’s sake?

New Year made in thought
bought and sold in thought
tell me where in the world
is real of midnight
announcing the new
auld lang sine hymn to
2025’s forgotten dreams.

Who in our world agrees
time zones wily constructs?
aukland, sydney, bangkok
london, greenland, moscow,
washington and tehran?
fireworks fix the views
for the better off
in unfounded stories.

Oh, fireworks to witness
of those flashing colours
in midnight’s mystery
oh wow, with such big eyes
exploding light and sound
once in a lifetime views
as kids crouch in terror
in palestine, ukraine
under explicit skies.

Big clock strikes midnight
a singing bell rings out
to confirm emptiness
stay a moment and ends
yes, between grand gong
you will find the real
to wake you up from
the blink of a moment
forming this year in days
with mind's pull to numbers.

What a precious joy
not bound up with events
no reason to reveal
you can find joy nearby
after end of a breath
and before start of next.

That’s close
Wowsers.
