GUIDELINES FOR SMALL GROUPS

Sometimes small groups get involved in theoretical views on a specific issue. Some people in the group might find the discussion heady, argumentative and unproductive. It is worthwhile to keep to first-hand experience and understanding. This avoids getting caught up in abstractions, generalisations or multiple views.

A small group may not require a facilitator. It might be worthwhile for someone to name:

General Purpose(s)

• Share experiences

• Learn from each other

• To find a resolution to any differences

• Develop mutual understanding/agreements.

Guidelines for a Small Group 

• One minute of silence followed by a reading or outline of the guidelines listed here.

• One person in the group ensures participants keep to this principle.

• Every person has opportunity to speak. An invite to a participant may be necessary.

• Nobody dominates the meeting.

• Participants remain mindful of slipping into generalities.

• Group keeps to the topic with a supportive tone rather than arguments.

• At the end, each person states a single sentence of value heard in the meeting.

• If group wish to discuss in general social issues, participants make a separate time for this.
